With TAVR the diseased Aortic Valve is narrowed. Instead of being cut out and replaced using 'open heart surgery' the aortic valve is pushed out the way using a balloon and new valve, suspended on a large stent scaffold inserted percutaneously as elegantly shown in this third party commercial video below.

Aortic Stenosis is a common medical condition that is fast becoming the leading cause for referral to Cardiothoracic Units in the UK.
Until 10 years ago the only option for treatment was 'open heart surgery' which involves cutting the breast bone (median sternotomy) and bypassing the circulation using a heart lung oxygenator machine.
The more recent invention of percutenous techniques have transformed the treatment into one which no longer requires a sternotomy and which is considered a great deal less invasive. To get some idea of what is involved view the BHF Video below.

Doctors can refer their patient's for specialist consultation regarding TAVR or Aortic Valve treatments with a standard referral letter posted to us at 5 Huxley Road Guildford GU2 7RE or Fax to 01483 467120
We do not acept self-referrals for TAVR, however can advise patients who are interested in this treatment on how they may be referred via their GP or Physician.
