Leading up to and on the day of your HeartScan

At a glance..

Here are some frequently asked questions about what to expect before your HeartScan and on the day.

Click below to see a list of frequently asked questions and our cardiologists' answers.

Back to Q and A

How will I receive information about my HeartScan?

Once you have provisionally (ie 'pencilled in') booked your VCL HeartScan date and time by phone or 'online', our scheduling team should be in touch by email with the following:

  1. Confirmation of date, time and cost of your scan
  2. Our Registration form and Safety Check list (on line form)
  3. A unique URL link and instructions on how you will be able to access your results.

Due to UK Radiation protection laws, your scan can only be medically approved and confirmed once this safety check list has been submitted.

Once you have submitted this, you will then be emailed a confirmation along with our invoice for the scan, and asked to pay in full prior to the scan day.

If the safety check/ registration or payment have not been completed at least 2 days before the scan, it may have to be rescheduled.

Do I need a blood test before a CAC Scan?

No, because a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan does not involve use of intravenous contrast, so you will not need a cannula and there is no requirement for us to check the kidney function beforehand.

Can I drive to have the CAC scan and park and drive myself afterwards?

Providing there are no medical contraindications, you should be able to drive directly after the scan.

Why are safety checks required before a CAC Scan

To ensure that there is a good reason for the test and no contraindications.

For more information about having a Coronary CT Angiogram this video from Oxford UK is very informative.

Where will my CT scan be done?

Due to NHS requiring greater access to all available CT scanners during COVID 19 pandemic we and our patients have had to be more flexible about rescheduling and location of scanner used for non urgent CACS.

Rest assured our teams will be doing their best to schedule the scan on the day or as close to the day as posisble and will be in touch prior to the scan with details of which location it will be done at.

All scan results are processed and reported by our faculty and cardiology team so whereever the scan is done the results will be sent out from our offices including a Cardiologist report.

How long before I get my result?

After a CACS is undertaken the CT data have to first be reviewed for reporting of the structures and measurement of the Calcium score using the Agatson method.  This result must then be reviewed by our Cardiologist alongside the clinician referral letter (or patient questionnaire that has to be completed on line prior to the test). The formal result, complete with advice is then word processed by our back office and dispatched.

Our goal is to have the result to the patient within 7 working days of the scan.

Do I have to prepare myself in any way for the scan (including what to wear, etc..)?

No preparation is necessary.  However it would be best if you could leave jewelry, that might interfere with X-ray images, at home.

In most cases you need not undress.

Small electrodes are placed on your skin so that the CT scan can be acquired in time with your heart beat (timed using the ECG).
