NHS Cardiology services are in huge demand which generally means long waiting times for NHS appointments.
Heartscreen+ is our healthscreening plan for patients that have no symptoms, which is a ‘test only’ service.
In contrast, 'Consultants Direct' is designed for people who wish to self-refer for specialist Consultation – usually because they have had an NHS test, hospital admission or are waiting to be seen on NHS and want to fast-track or literally to get answers from the Cardiologist direct.
NB Neither of our Heartscreen+ and Consultants Direct services require a GP referral Letter.

Many people think (incorrectly) that a GP referral and private health Insurance are both mandatory before they can attend our Private Medical clinic or see a Consultant privately.
Patients also worry that once in the private system their care costs can spiral out of control. However in recent years we are finding that more and more of our patients are actually either un-insured and/or have referred themself without a GP referral using our Healthscreening and Consultants Direct services. Most are surprised how little it actually costs - which is often less than the price of having their car serviced!
We advise patients without any typical heart symptoms to consider our healthscreening- services which do not require a GP referral or a formal Consultation. Because for about half of all people presenting with heart disease the first symptom is sudden death or a heart attack (ie may be at risk without any symptoms), it makes sense to find out if they are at risk by screening- after all prevention is better than cure.
Consultants Direct is usually much less expensive than traditional Private Medical care since many of the tests and procedures have either been done or are due to be done through NHS providers. By not duplicating tests, the costs of private medical care can be largely reduced to pure Consultation, providing the patient or our PA can get hold of hospital medical reports/tests for the Cardiologist to review.

What does it entail?

Consultants Direct is a new SCVC service launched in 2018 reflecting changing patient referral patterns and needs.
- GP or Self referral (the latter is only for patients who have existing NHS or Private tests, admissions or appointments done or due).
- Flexible, with options the patient can select
- Options range from Consultation only to a package price that includes essential tests also required that are only decided on after our Consultant's consideration of each individual referral
- Written fixed price quotation
- Our standard price includes PAs support in recovering test and reports from NHS providers
- Lower price if the Patient supplies all medical test results in preparation for the Consultation
Once you have scheduled an appointment you will be sent details on when and where it will take place along with the fixed price quotation.
If you have booked our Consultants Direct service you should either bring or email us your hospital discharge summary, clinic letters or test results or alternatively request our office team obtains copies prior to your Consultation.
On arrival at our test centre you will need to complete our Registration form and may be asked to complete a paper or electronic Patient Questionnaire (unless already done). WShile with us you will be asked whether you wish to have any extra blood tests done such as a Cholesterol test, Prostate screen (PSA), Vit D level, Thyroid check, or HbA1c/ Blood Sugar testing for Diabetes (these would cost extra).
Please note that unless already under our care, if you have, or have had, possible heart symptoms, and you have not been seen by any specialist services within 12 months we normally advise seeing your GP for triage and onward referral where appropriate, since in some cases it mandates immediate admission to NHS Hospital.
SCVC Cardiologists do not generally see patients who self-refer with new symptoms, and Insurance Company reimbursment schemes also require a GP referral to a named Cardiologist.
