Dr Peter Clarkson
MBBS
Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist
Dr Peter Clarkson is a leading cardiologist in the UK with 25 years of consultant experience. He is highly experienced in cardiology and general medicine, specializing in both coronary intervention (coronary angiography, angioplasty, and stenting) and pacing/complex devices including conducting system pacing, cardiac resynchronisation
therapy and implantable cardioverter defibrillators. He also has an interest in cardiovascular disease prevention, particularly tackling underlying metabolic abnormalities.
After training in London he was appointed to Frimley Park Hospital in 2001 where he served as the lead cardiologist for 23 years. During this time he expanded the department from 2 cardiologists to 9 and established invasive and interventional services by developing 2 cardiac catheter laboratories. The services now include coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention, making it a regional primary PCI service that treats acute severe heart attacks, pacing, complex devices, electrophysiological diagnostic procedures and ablation. Dr Peter Clarkson sees patients with a wide variety of cardiological problems including coronary artery disease, valve disorders, heart failure, arrhythmias and preventative cardiology. Common presentations include chest pain, breathlessness and palpitations.
Dr Peter Clarkson currently serves as a Director of the Surrey Cardiovascular Clinic, located at the University of Surrey Research Park in Guildford. The clinic specialises in providing state-of-the-art, same-day cardiovascular diagnostics including ECG, echocardiography, exercise stress testing, blood pressure and heart rhythm monitors, and cardiac CT scanning. Blood testing is available and the clinic runs specialist teams for assessing and managing both metabolic health and heart failure.
Where possible, we aim to provide a one-stop service which allows patients to undergo diagnostics prior to their appointments, with results then available to review during the consultation. This allows for general cardiac risk screening and advice for those who are concerned about their cardiac wellbeing, have a strong family history of cardiac issues or patients needing guidance on reducing risk factors through lifestyle changes. It also provides efficient diagnostic services and pathways to further treatment for those with acute cardiac symptoms. With multiple clinics held weekly in Guildford and Farnham we offer very regular availability.
