Dr Katherine McCullough

Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology and General (Internal) Medicine

Dr Kath McCullough is a consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology with a specialist interest in Bariatric Medicine at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital and the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Kath undertook her initial medical training at the University of Edinburgh and qualified with a 1st class honours degree in neuroscience as part of her medical degree. In 2007, she was awarded a prestigious academic training programme based at the Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College London. During this time Kath obtained a Welcome Trust fellowship leading to the successful completion of a PhD on the role of gut hormones and novel treatments in obesity. She then became a Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London before moving to the Royal Surrey Hospital to take up a substantive consultant position.

Over the span of Kath’s medical career she has published extensively in medical journals and books and presented at conferences in the UK and abroad. She has also appeared in the media including the BBC, radio and other social media talking on a wide range of subjects including obesity and appetite, diabetes as well as current affairs within the NHS. In 2019 she was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.

As the special advisor for obesity to the Royal College of Physicians, Kath chairs the Advisory group on Nutrition, Weight and Health, and is a member of the Advisory group on Health Inequalities. She also co-chairs the Government Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, South East Regional Weight Management Services Delivery Committee. Kath is a strong advocate for people living with obesity and believes that we all have a part to play in helping people lead healthier lives.
